Volunteering

Sometimes when you want to volunteer at some place you have to go through a lot of effort to do some good. Take what happened to me recently. I was advised that it would help me if I volunteered somewhere. First up, like getting a job the first place you apply you may not be accepted. I was pretty I only put in 2 applications and got accepted by the 2nd place only because they are so desperate for volunteers. But what I had to do, is in one word ridiculous.

So where did I wind up at the local VA hospital. I know I am not the only one who doesn’t like the US being the world police force. But I have no problem with it’s veterans, some of which are left in pretty bad shape health wise after their military experience.

So what did I have to do, I had to finger printed the day I put my application in. Once my background check came through, they finally called me in for orientation. There you are told no pictures please, and keep your mouth shut about a veterans medical condition. You also have to choose what you like to do. I say the VA is pretty good about that, there is a wide variety of jobs volunteers can do from being a driver all the way down to transferring patients from their rooms to where they have to go in the hospital. Even working in their Hospice, which up to then I never knew existed. But it makes sense.

But before you can start work you have to take a TB test. But once that is done, they give you an interview on the spot and everything is arranged. You even get your volunteers smock, with your ID tag.

So what did I decide I was going to do, get vets to sign up for a govt health site. Not the one you heard about, this one allows them access to their medical info. From what they showed me it’s a great site.

Will let you know how things turn out.
