Furries Aren’t As Weird As You Think by Molly Fosco

Thousands of furries invite you to the party of the year. Open your mind and step into their world of friends, family, and fursonas.

There’s a subculture you’ve likely heard of that’s been slowly growing every year. Their main identifier is the enormous cartoon animal costumes they wear for fun. Yes, we’re talking about furries.

What exactly is a furry? A furry is both someone who dresses up in cartoon animal costumes, as well as someone who is a fan of cartoon animal characters – the community uses the term interchangeably. But furry culture goes much deeper than that. At furry conventions, like the annual Anthrocon in Pittsburgh, every furry in attendance feels like they can truly be themselves and they’re supported by people who really understand them.

David Kanaszka from Jacksonville, Florida dresses up as a white tiger for Anthrocon every year. Part of the reason he loves furry conventions is because the community is so open-minded and accepting. He says, “You can be yourself. You don’t have to worry about what they’re going to think of you because you’re dressed up like a giant animal.”

Pittsburgh has really begun to embrace the furries as well when they come to the city each year. Not only is it fun for little kids to pet the animals and take pictures with them, but the Anthrocon convention actually brings in about $5.7 million dollars in revenue. And they always donate a portion of that to an animal-related charity.

One of the biggest concerns of the furry community is that they don’t want to be misunderstood. Many people mistakenly believe that dressing up like a furry is a sexual fetish, but that’s actually far from the truth. The only assumption you should make about the furry community is that they’re some of the most creative individuals you’ll ever meet.
