Yesterday was one of the best days of my Washington trip. First of all, I wrapped up seeing the Natural History Museum.
Went to the National Archives Museum.
I am telling the truth…there isn’t much there. But the Gift Shop is one of the Best in Washington.
My next place OH WOW!!!
The Air and Space Museum
Nothing short of totally incredible. So much history, so much everything you ever heard or read that involves flight. They even have the ORIGINAL Wright Bros. aircraft. More on that later after I get home when I get my photos uploaded.
Lastly, after I went through everything there, I ran into this..
My first day was a busy one after a 26-minute ride on the Metro AKA the subway.
My first stop was Madame Tussaud’s
A museum well known for its wax figures. To me, it was simply brilliant to see these historic and political figures along with celebrities. Beyond the 2D photos, I really will say if your excited about this place go, not interested you will be bored.
Stop # 2 Ford’s Theater
Since the theater was closed they have a museum which shows off that fateful day. Frankly, there isn’t much but it was FREE.
#3 Peterson House
Across the street from the Ford’s Theater. there isn’t much to see. Except for the stack of books, (more reproductions) showing how many books were written over Lincoln’s death. It’s 4 stories HIGH.
#4 Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum
A Fantastic place really loved the exhibits on human evolution, gems, and dinosaurs. Also home to the best salad I ever ate.
#5 Smithsonian Castle
What can I say I have been wanting to see this since I was a kid. Not much is there but a Gift Shop and Cafe. The building also holds the Smithsonian Offices. But it was so cool to be there.
#6 Washington Monument
Which reopened on the very day I was there. Didn’t go in and up the newly remodeled elevator turns out you need tickets and they give them out at 8:30 AM till gone. I may have to skip this one.
I was planning on dropping by the White House to possibly shake my fist in its general direction. But it turns out I couldn’t, it seems these days the area in front of the White House is closed. According to a local which is almost all of the time.
Our day-to-day existence is very much alive with hope, although there is no guarantee of our future. There is no guarantee that tomorrow at this time we will be here. But still we are working for that purely on the basis of hope. So, we need to make the best use of our time.
After
a bit of confusion on my part while at Union Station in Chicago I was
finally able to board my train…40 mins. late. It seems the Capital
Limited had some mechanical issues even before my trip start. At one
point we were more than 4 hours late which came about that the
schedule between trains are so tight we often had to wait for freight
trains to pass. Which pushed back EVERYTHING, including meeting my
friend. They finally were able to cut that delay by some 20 minutes.
We finally arrived in Washington, DC exactly 3 hours and 41 minutes
late.
What you really need to know and yours truly almost screwed himself on. Is that Baggage MUST BE CHECKED IN at the very latest 1 hour before departure. I made it with all of 4 minutes to spare. re FOOD, the Capital Limited is like a growing number of Amtrak trains with no Dining Car. Meaning pre made sandwiches and microwave food, along with drinks and chips and I am sorry to say little else. If you like this stuff and are willing to pay $2.50 for a can of soda good for you. Otherwise, bring your own food.
The
staff was friendly and even apologetic for all the delays.
But
despite everything the sites were very memorable, and the other
passengers who were willing to talk really helped past the time.
As
for the WMATA better known to the rest of us as the subway was one of
the best I ever used.
