Brasil FurFest 2020 to be postponed to 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the postponement of Brasil FurFest 2020 to 2021. The change is due to the current situation imposed by the Novel Coronavirus pandemic.
It is a very difficult decision, since all planning made by us and many attendees will have to be changed and this will cause discomfort for all of us. However, we need to take into account the safety and health of everyone involved in the event, and given the current situation we have no choice but to postpone Brasil FurFest.
When and where will Brasil FurFest 2021 be held?
The event will take place from July 16th to 18th at the Mercure Hotel, in Santos, SP, Brazil.
Will the theme A Haunted Hotel be kept?
Yes, the theme will be the same.
And is Uncle Kage still a guest of honor?
Yes, his coming is confirmed for 2021.
What happens now?
We are working on a system for our website so that attendees have the option to keep their registration for 2021 or request a full refund of the amount paid. The information will be released in the coming weeks.
We ask all attendees to consider keeping the registration for 2021, given that BFF has already spent part of the budget and a wave of requests for reimbursement can affect the event finances gravely.
When will I be able to choose to keep enrollment or refund?
In the coming weeks we will bring you more information about keeping your registrations or requesting a refund.
Always stay tuned on our website (brasilfurfest.com.br/en), social networks or the telegram ad channel (t.me/brasilfurfest).
How will the refund work?
Refund rules will also be announced in the coming weeks. We ask atendees NOT to open a dispute or request chargebacks through PayPal. Refunds will be made, but the request made directly to PayPal harms Brasil FurFest relationship with the payment methods and can lead to the permanent closure of our accounts on their sites.
Once again we ask you to consider keeping tickets for 2021 as a way to help BFF both in financial terms and in the joy of receiving all the furries for yet another big party!
I still hadn’t bought the ticket.
The sale of tickets for BFF will resume in January 3rd, 2021. The values are already available on our website.
Should I cancel my reservation or can I keep it for 2021? What should I do?
You must cancel your reservations as the event has been postponed.
If your reservation is at Mercure Hotel, you must cancel or transfer your reservation to 2021 (with the same rates from 2020*) through the email h6314-re@accor.com.br .
If your reservation is at Ibis Hotel, you must cancel or transfer your reservation to 2021 by e-mail h5530-re@accor.com.br .
*The special convention rate is only valid at the Mercure for 2 or 3 guests rooms.
Why not postpone Brasil FurFest to a date still in 2020?
We prefer to take the event to 2021 avoid another postponement.
We also believe that the post-pandemic economic situation may be difficult for everyone.
By postponing the event in a year we will have more time and we hope everything has returned to normal.
Too bad we won’t have BFF this year. I want to help in some way…
You can help by posting photos and videos about BFF on social media with #brasilfurfest.
Let’s keep the memories of the moments we shared in previous years alive!

Air Pirate Funnies where parody met lawyers

Air Pirate Funnies was created by Dan O’Neill with the help of Bobby London, Shary Flenniken, Gary Hallgren and Ted Richards back in 1971. Only 2 issues were ever printed. The first in July, the second in August of that year. To know what Air Pirate Funnies was and why it became a subject of a lawsuit requires an explanation.
Air Pirate Funnies was an underground comic, meaning it was not published by some major publishers but by those who worked hard creating the work. Air Pirate Funnies was drawn in the style of the 1930s Disney comics but showed the characters engaging in purely adult behavior such as sex and drugs. I know this seems very tame by today’s standards after all – you can find similar materials on many sites including YouTube with only occasionally the character’s owner demanding it be taken down. But not back in 1971, the days where Disney sued for using characters and stories that frankly were in public domain such as the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs. Disney clearly targeted Air Pirate Funnies for that very reason.
So what exactly happened? I will not try and bore you with all the legal details as it turns out several books were written on what exactly happened. So here is what happened in short. Disney got a hold of a copy of Air Pirate Funnies and decided to call their lawyers and accused Don O’Neill and the others of copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and unfair competition among other things.
In 1972 Don O’Neill and company claimed Fair Use, but the California District Court still ruled against them. Which then slapped them with a $200,000 judgement. So what did Don O’Neill and the others do? They attempted to appeal that ruling. They went to Court of Appeals for The Ninth Circuit and still lost, although the copyright infringement case was dropped. As they tried to make money to bring their care to the Supreme Court. They published a work based upon The Tortoise and the Hare. Which for the record is in Public Domain, but all that hard effort not to mention cost Disney got a court order and confiscated every copy of 10,000 that were printed.
Eventually they were able to take their case to the Supreme Court in 1979, but they refused to accept the case.

In 1979 Don O’Neill created a 4-page story, Communiqué #1 from the M.L.F. (Mouse Liberation Front), which appeared in the magazine Co-Evolution Quarterly #21. There was a second one which, according to sources, was delivered in person to Disney Studios. I can not find any information if the second one was ever released to the public.
In 1980, with $190,000 judgement left unpaid and $2 Million US Dollars in legal fees, Disney just dropped the entire matter.
So who were the people behind all of this…
Dan O’Neill who did Odd Bodkins, comic for the San Francisco Chronicle, which ran for 6 years and focused on the Counter Culture movement of the 1960s.
Bobby London, did 2 underground comics before this, Merton and Rat Subterranean News.
Shary Flenniken has a similar story as they were already a member of the underground comic scene. Whom later would be the Editor of the National Lampoon.
Gary Hallgren was just appearing on the comic scene in the early 1970s with his own work appearing in the Northwest Passage, a local newspaper based out of Bellingham, WA USA before his work appeared in Air Pirate Funnies. His later work includes the San Francisco Comic Book, an underground publication. Mort the Dead Teenager which was published by Marvel Comics.
Ted Richards was already in the underground comic scene at this time. But by 1987 he had already founded his own company Adware, which produced software for both Windows and Macs.
To what happened later..
As best as I can find A 3rd issue of Air Pirate Funnies was killed. I cannot find any evidence that any work on that issue has survived to this day or let alone a complete issue even exists. All unsold copies of Air Pirate Funnies were destroyed. Making what was sold very rare. I found a recent auction (not Ebay) where Air Pirates Funnies #2 sold for $350.
In 2010 someone created Mouse Liberation Front on Facebook. The entire page only contains 7 posts and that last one was August 12, 2012. Except for a MLF card there is no other art on that page.
