We tweeted today about having to cancel one of our BDSM 101 discussion topic panels “Littles Meetup” because of threats being called into our venue. This was as much of a surprise to us as it was to our venue.
Last year we hosted this exact panel without a single complaint as part of our BDSM set of 18+ panels. Titled, “BDSM 101: What is a little/Big?” The panel was meant as a hot topics panel, to discuss ideals about this controversial concept within the BDSM community as well as fur community. Representative at the panel were members of the BDSM community who talked about the concept of little/Big within the realm of BDSM concepts.
This year’s panel, “Little Meetup” had originally been posted as, “Meet the Babyfurs” by request of the BDSM personnel wishing to host this panel again for our community. They wanted the panel to sound friendlier to our community and not something limited to BDSM to make it more relatable.
Sadly, it seems that our community was not receptive to this and instead of addressing this topic with con staff, individuals decided to call in threats to the venue.
At this point, staff decided to change the name of the panel back to what it was originally named. This however did not stem the harassment pouring into the venue and attacks were now being hurled at our staff members.
Upper management of Califur decided that this was now a security risk to the convention and attendees. Upon speaking with the venue and law enforcement, all entities decided that nixing the panel was in the best interest of attendees, staff and Califur because of the threats. We also all agreed that raising the number of security personnel was needed for this convention because of these calls.
The members of the BDSM community that were hosting this panel would like to express their sincerest apologies for this misunderstanding, and feel that not engaging with our community for this year is in the best interest of the convention. We will also be canceling the other BDSM panel as a precaution, even though it is hosted by different individuals.
We are unable to comment on this further than this posting, as this matter is still under investigation. We thank you for understanding and we are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused our attendees.
Our priority is the safety of our attendees, staff, and those assisting us at the venues we occupy. If for any reason you have a concern, please address it to convention staff in a constructive manner. Attacking people is never the answer.
Let’s have a fun and safe con.
At least they are honest about it.
